Transmission time is the biological basis for tick checks. *Borrelia burgdorferi* (Lyme disease bacterium) requires 36-72 hours of tick attachment to transmit. *Anaplasma phagocytophilum* can transmit within 24 hours. Powassan virus can transmit in as little as 15 minutes.
